Island Spear Co is built from Puerto Rico by divers. Not a media company that discovered a niche — people who actually load a pole spear before breakfast.

Here’s the problem we kept hitting: spearfishing’s most important knowledge is scattered and unstructured. Regulations live across dozens of state agency websites, each organized differently, some buried in PDFs from years ago. Gear data— band sizing, shaft compatibility, which wetsuit thickness for which water temperature — is spread across a decade of forum threads, half of it contradictory. Getting a straight answer to “is this legal here?” or “will this shaft fit my gun?” means an evening of digging.

That’s the gap. Our mission is simple:

• Structured. Regulations and gear data organized the way divers actually ask questions, not the way agencies file paperwork.
• Verified.Every regulation entry cites the official agency source and shows the date it was checked. When we don’t know, we say so — we never guess a regulation.
• Free. The database and the tools stay open. No login, no paywall on safety- and legality-critical information.

We keep the lights on honestly: some gear links earn us a commission (always disclosed, never influencing what the data says), and we’ll sell things we make ourselves — a beginner’s guide, some shirts. The data itself is not for sale.

No fake team page, no invented stats, no “trusted by 50,000 divers” badge on a site that launched this year. Just the work, in the open, one verified page at a time.

Where it stands

The site is young and we’re building in public. The core is live now: the US regulations database covering all fifty states plus DC and five territories, cited to the official agencies, and honest gear guides. Gear comparison tables and calculators are next. If you want to know when new pieces ship, leave your email.
